In Search Engine Optimization (SEO) “BACKLINK” plays a major role in SERP rank. it is one of the very important components in SEO. In this post, I will share complete information on Backlink, it’s types and importance in Digital Marketing.
Bonus: How to analyze competitors’ BACKLINK, and how to use them for your own website.
What is Backlink?
When a webpage links to any other page, it’s called a backlink. In the past, backlinks were the major metric for the ranking of a webpage. A page with a lot of backlinks tended to rank higher on all major search engines, including Google. This is still true to a large extent.
In simple way we can say “Backlinks are incoming links to a webpage”.
In past low-quality links helped in ranking a site. But after the Penguin algorithm, everything has been changed in backlinking.
Backlinks should come from quality sites: If it come from a very low ranked post/page then definitely it will give a negative impact and high ranked page will add trust level to your site.
Backlinks should come from relevant website/industry: As per t5he Penguin algorithm it should come from the relevant industry. Hope below example will clear your further doubts.
Example: You want to buy a car and you got 20 suggestions form bike riders and 15 suggestions from car drivers which will be relevant for you. Now take another example you want to buy Innova car and you got 25 suggestions who don’t have a car, 15 suggestions who drive Honda city and 5 suggestions who drive Innova from past 5 years, hope you get the point.

When a website links to another website, but the link has a “No-Follow Tag”, that link does not pass link juice or in other words don’t take the crawler to the linked site. No-follow links do not contribute anything in page ranking. You can use the no-follow tag when site is not reliable or spam count is high. Although Wikipedia creates No-follow links.

- Unique content
- Dead links
- Get from your competitors
- Guest blogging
- Web directories
1. Unique content
Always remember content is the king and if you want people to link to you, you need to give them a reason. And the best reason is an awesome article. If your content is helpful and enjoyable, people will be happy to link to it.
How you will write awesome article?
You may follow below points to write an article:
- Article should be a solution for the problem: People always search a solution for their problem.
- It should be easy to read.
- It should be simple and short.
- Use as many as Images and proper headings.
- Add authority in the article.
Now the time is to send some outreach emails. Use a tool like BuzzSumo.
2. Backlinks from Guest blogging
Guest blogging is another effective way to get the good backlink. Here you are providing free article to the site owner and in exchange the blog owner will allow some backlink within the post.
Now the next challenge is finding sites who allows the guest blogger. You have to search sites that are already accepting guest posts. These sites typically have a page for contributors, e.g. “Write for Us” or “Contribute”. Use Google’s advanced search operators to find the sites
- your_topic + “write for us”
- your_topic + “become an author”
- your_topic + “guest post”
- your_topic + “guest article”
- your_topic + inurl:contribute
Another option is through tools Ahrefs’ Content Explorer, you can do it very easily but it is a paid tool.
3) Get Backlinks from your competitors
The best teacher is your competitor, if you follow them you will learn lots of lessons. And if you minutely analyse them through various tools you will get plenty of backlinks, you have to just replicate them so simple, right!
Use moz’s tool Link Intersect, it is a great and it will tell you who’s linking to multiple competitors, but not to you.
Add your competitors to the tool, and click “Show link opportunities”. Contact them and find an opportunity to link them as well.
4) Backlinks from Dead links
The best place is Wikipedia for broken links and dead links. Wikipedia is great source of information and daily millions of people are visiting the site and numerous external links are available. Because of the various reasons (Pages change, move or get deleted) sometime links don’t work. Webmasters and searchers hate broken links because they contribute to poor user experience. But, in reality they exist and very easily you can create Non-follow links.
Note: Wikipedia allows only Non-follow links.
Through the Wikigrabber tool you can find Deadlinks easily
Click on the link where it is mentioned Wikipedia. Now in Wikipedia page press Ctrl+F and write Dead you will get the dead link as below.
Write a content accordingly and update the link.
5) Backlinks from Web Directories
Submitting blog to web directories is very easy to get backlinks. But not popular at present because finding a good web directory is very difficult. You can google the web directories which are relevant to your sector contact them and request for a link if you send 10 request you will get one.
Avoid those that ask you to create backlink to their website and don’t use automatic direct submission tactics. It increases the spam count, and it may decrease the domain authority as well.
